Delays for New Enrollees to Medicare Due to Coronavirus

If you are soon eligible for Medicare, you would be wise to apply to enroll as early as possible. Some people will not experience delays but if you delayed enrollment because you are still working, you could have trouble signing up. This is stressfull, especially if you are losing group coverage due to a layoff. In this scenario, you will need to complete two forms, which may also present problems. First you need to have your employer complete, this form: https://www.cms.gov/medicare/CMS-Forms/CMS-Forms/Downloads/CMS-L564E.pdf

You will also need to complete this form: https://www.cms.gov/Medicare/CMS-Forms/CMS-Forms/Downloads/CMS40B-E.pdf

You would ordinarily take these to your local field office; however, they are now closed. Now you can call your local office and ask for their fax number to turn in the documents. You can find your local Social Security field office and their phone number here: https://secure.ssa.gov/ICON/main.jsp#officeResults

If you do not have internet access, you are going to have to call and you can expect significant hold time. Their number is 800-772-1213
